Machakos town is located about 60 kilometres southeast of Nairobi and stretches down along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

It borders Makueni to the South, Kitui to the east and Kajiado to the west. It was first established as a centre for Akamba trading administration and currently it has earned a reputation of being a tourist hub in the country. Bearing in mind that the county leads in development at county level, it now stands to gain more revenue from tourism. Its situation at the base of five hills, make it an ideal destination for sportsmen. Athletes head to these hills; Iveti hills and Kiima Kimwe for their training because of their high altitude. For those who enjoy green scenery and beautiful rock designs, Makongo valley offers a great attraction to adventure tourists who want to explore the 40km stretch by motorbikes. Along the road, there exist friendly structures for selling food and artefacts to travellers.
